Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is one of the largest and most important wildlife sites in England, set in an exceptional coastal and wetland landscape and home to 4,500 varieties of plants and animals, including more than 300 considered nationally rare or endangered.
Sussex Wildlife Trust, who manage the Reserve in partnership with the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and other partners, have identified the need for a purpose-built visitor centre to replace Lime Kiln Cottage which is cold and damp. Plans and a public fundraising campaign are well advanced for the new Discovery Centre, but we need your help to raise the remaining one-third of the funds required.
Golden Plovers have a distinctive appearance and through careful habitat management now form large wintering flocks close to the Discovery Centre. A prominent wildlife artist, Bob Greenhalf, has designed a flock of wood cut, flying Golden Plovers, which will permanently decorate the entrance foyer of the new building.
All donors who contribute £500 or more will have their name inscribed onto the display.
So please help us, donate £500...

St Michael's Hospice
If you've felt inspired by past Half Marathon runners then why not do something amazing in 2018 and take on Hastings Half Marathon yourself. By joining our team you can help make a huge difference to the lives of people in our local community affected by life-limiting illnesses.
St Michael’s Hospice provides excellent holistic care and support for all those throughout Hastings and Rother affected by a progressive life-limiting illness or bereavement.
Since we opened in 1987 we have cared for more than 12,500 people with life-limiting illnesses throughout Hastings and Rother, through a number of different services.
The cost of running the Hospice and providing the full range of services to our patients is over £5million a year. With no more than one third of this being provided by the NHS we need to raise the balance, circa £3.7million, over £10,000 per day, from voluntary sources.
All our runners will receive a running vest or t-shirt, personalised sponsorship forms, fundraising support and postrace hospitality.John Jempson and Son Ltd. Haulage of Rye have kindly sponsored the Runners Refreshments.
Martha Trust is a local charity that support young people and adults with profound disabilities and provide a home for life, along with respite facilities and support for families. They have a home called Mary House on The Ridge in Hastings and 2 homes in Kent.
At Martha we pride ourselves on transforming the lives of the people we support. Adults with profound disabilities are amongst the most vulnerable in society, and need be nurtured and supported in a safe, loving environment, something we are very proud of offering at Martha.
Although the nursing care we provide is funded by local authorities and Clinical Commissioning Groups through their duty of care, we rely on the support of individuals and local organisations to keep Martha Trust operating and maintained and to enable the extras that make the difference between giving supportive, holistic care and just minding someone - the very worst cases of which too regularly make the news. At Martha 87p in every pound of our income goes to the care of the people we support. We need to raise £235,000 this year. We would be incredibly grateful if you would consider fundraising for Martha when doing the Hastings half marathon. Please contact Kerry Rubins at firstname.lastname@example.org

The Sara Lee Trust aims to improve the lives and well-being of people affected by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses in the Hastings and Rother area through the provision, free of charge, of psychological and counselling support, creative and complementary therapies, and therapeutic group activities.

Pestalozzi International Village Trust
Pestalozzi is a UK-based charity with more than 50 years' experience of offering life-changing opportunities to young people from disadvantaged communities around the world. Their vision is to inspire young people to make a difference in the world and their mission is to produce globally conscious young leaders.
Pestalozzi awards scholarships to exceptional 16-19 year olds who are academically gifted but have limited educational prospects in their home countries. These young people have all demonstrated their enthusiasm for helping to make a difference in their communities.
Pestalozzi students live for two years in our multi-cultural, multi-faith community in East Sussex, UK, where they welcome difference and embrace diversity. They complete their secondary-level education and undertake a broad range of extra-curricular activities, gaining an holistic education focused on the Pestalozzi principles of Head, Heart and Hands.
Pestalozzi scholarships give these young people an opportunity they would not otherwise receive - the chance to develop their potential, pursue their ambitions and go on to make a real and lasting difference in the world.
Name: Pemba Dorji
The last time I participated in my school’s Half Marathon, I finished it in about 2 hours and 20 minutes but suffered some severe muscle pains afterwards. It was without any prior practice. This time I trained along with my Pestalozzi friends every Sunday for a good four months before the grand finale came. The event lied right ahead. We cheered up each other as we all joined thousands other on the road. The kick-off signal went and the marathon began.
I maintained a steady speed as I went on. I was really encouraged and up-lifted to see many people cheering and helping the runners all along the route. It was a very supportive environment which I didn’t get in my previous marathon.
Almost 11miles done and I discerned the cool breeze of the sea and the sight of the sea-front ahead. I wasn’t very tired but I started to have some pain in my muscles as I descended down to the seaside. For a while I feared I might have to give up but my heart was too elated to step down from the final two miles of what is going to become a remarkable achievement in my dairy. I compromised my pace a bit for my muscle but kept on pushing myself forward along the- as many other have told me earlier- "the never-ending seafront.” Finally, the sight of the finishing line drew me closer and closer to my goal, and to our goal.
The road ahead bored along its side so many welcoming hands and resounding felicitation. All the tense in my legs subsided and ebullience elevated high above me. A smile forced its way on my face and I gave a full rejuvenated dash in the final few yards. Just then I realized that I have just run pass the sweetest road I have ever came across in my life.
Shortly after, my other friends also crossed the finishing line and the atmosphere was filled with the achievement of our team spirit and support. We made it at last!. Looking at the time, I am very glad to have beaten my previous record by nearly an hour.
Pestalozzi has been involved in the Hastings Half Marathon for many years and here is a story from Pemba Dorji who ran for us last year.

Charity for KIDS
Making a difference
Charity for Kids was established in 2011 to provide help for disabled, sick and terminally ill children – and their families – across Hastings & Rother. We help children and their families with specialised equipment that is either not available via the health services or comes with a very high costs, which is not always possible.
We currently have over 100 people who have committed to do this and sent us their email addresses. We have begun organising small monthly runs for those who want to participate in group training, and we have a Hulk 'committee' now who are working with us to help organise the various aspects of the event.
We would greatly appreciate your support in any way you can offer it. Winston is such a fun-loving, caring and outgoing person. He brings us so much joy and we are fully committed to making this a success.
