On a bright sunny day, with light winds, and temperature of 16 degrees, the Kenyans returned for revenge, after losing to U.K.'s Michael Coleman in 2006.
And so it turned out with Kenyans taking the first Three Places, and a
fourth for Zimbabwe, with Willard Chinhanhu.
Half Marathon Champion Jo McAlister from Northern Ireland, was the highest placed
Brit, closely followed by Tomas Abyu and defending Champion Michael Coleman.
The latter beating the UK Champion Dave Mitchinson and fellow Internationals
John McFarlane and David Wardle.
The overall winner was Philemon Baaru (Kenya) in 1:03:22, who with surging
runs every so often, gradually burnt of his compatriots, finishing a minute
ahead of twice previous winner Simon Kasimili (Kenya), with Simon
Tonui (Kenya) third.
But the biggest outcome of the event was that for the first time a Hastings
winner has won the event for three times. Up to today, seven athletes had
won twice, but Birhan Dagne (London) achieved this remarkable feat winning
in a time of 1:16:02, from second place Alice Braham, who also came second
in 2006, in 1:18:03.
It was a record turn out for this popular event, with nearly 5000 entrants,
supported round the course by 50,000 spectators. It seemed as if the whole
of Hastings was supporting the runners!
