2001 FILA Hastings Lions Half Marathon Summary

In a record field of 3701 entrants, we witnessed the best race in years, with Stephen Ariga (Kenya) who was third in 2000, narrowly beating top UK athlete Paul Evans and fellow countryman Bernhard Kangogo, in a close Finish. This was Paul Evans last race before reaching 'Vet' Class, but he went away with the most money, as he also won the First UK Athlete Award of £500.00 to go with £600.00 second place cheque. Other British contender Carl Thackery had to drop out at 8 miles with a muscle strain.

Fast improving UK International Andrea Green, won the Women's race convincingly, and with the first UK award also, finished up with more reward than the men with a £1500.00 cheque. Russian star Yelena Plastinina did not feel well on the day, and was a disappointing 3rd, which hardly paid for her air fare.

A total of 2892 finishers. Date next year is 17th March 2002
